Redesigning a Trail Exit at Fermanagh and Omagh District Council
The Challenge
During a routine trail inspection, RideNI identified a safety issue at one of the trail exits where a fast downhill section brought riders directly onto a connecting trail. The layout encouraged high speeds and harsh braking, creating a potential conflict point between riders and other trail users.
Before, the exit allowed for high exit speeds, little to no runoff room and there was a high risk of collisions
Our Approach
Following the inspection, RideNI developed a revised exit layout designed to naturally control rider speed, improve trail flow and reduce the risk of collisions.
Working closely with Fermanagh and Omagh District Council, we marked out the new trail alignment on the ground, supported the coordination of machine works and worked alongside the council team to deliver the improvements.
The works included reshaping corners, improving trail transitions and installing new materials, including geofabric, to create a more durable and sustainable trail surface.

This project is a great example of how strong partnerships can deliver effective trail management. Fermanagh and Omagh District Council’s Forest Rangers played a key role in delivering the works, using their skills in ground works and machine operation to bring the new design to life.
A special mention goes to Ranger Paul for his excellent digger work and attention to detail throughout the project.
Quality Assurance
Following completion, RideNI carried out a final inspection and signed off the works to confirm the trail had been completed to a suitable and sufficient standard.
This project highlights how councils and trail specialists can work together to maintain, improve and manage high-quality mountain bike trails — whether through in-house council skills or trusted contractor partnerships.
